Nationally

  • In the United States today, over 16,400 people are awaiting a liver transplant.
  • In 2008, there were 6,318 liver transplants conducted.

Region 11

  • I am currently listed in Region 11 which includes Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
  • In Region 11, just over 1000 people are awaiting a liver transplant.
  • In 2008 there were 632 liver transplants conducted.

Implications

  • The need for donor livers far exceeds the supply.
  • Nationally, well under half those in need of a liver transplant will receive one in the next year.
  • Each year, about 14% of those awaiting a liver die (Source: Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients).
